Be fearless: Organic Hair Color

Brittany McCallum

Fear is an emotion that holds you back from experiencing life, but if you have the courage to face it you may receive a big reward.

At age 26, I had never colored my hair. It's something I've wanted to do since middle school, but my mother would not allow it. Do you remember Sun-In, the peroxide spray used to lighten your hair? Well she wouldn't let me use that either so I would squeeze fresh lemon juice all over my hair and sit out by the pool hoping the sun would naturally brighten it during the summer.

Of course I could have dyed my hair as soon as I moved out of her house, but to be honest I was fearful. Deep down in my heart I wanted to go blonde, but several of my family members scared me into thinking that color will damage it and I was too afraid to ruin the strong healthy hair I've worked so hard to grow.

Now, I do what makes me happy. Life is short and I finally accepted that it's just hair! If it breaks off or falls out, it will grow back. So I made the decision to go for it. In search of less damaging products I stumbled upon Organic Color Systems. It's not 100% organic, but the company prides itself on using the maximum amount of certified organic products, a minimal amount of chemicals and is totally ammonia free.

My colorist, Maggie at Organic Beauty Bar in Santa Monica, California, mixed two organic products: Organic Color Systems and O Way. The permanent color had no harmful fumes, caused no scalp discomfort or staining and contained the following natural ingredients: certified organic chamomile, comfrey, grapefruit, orange, vitamins C, vitamin E and hydrolyzed wheat protein.

I was pleased to see how my coarse hair took to the organic color and loved the way it turned out. I think it looks beautiful, dramatic and represents how I feel on the inside which is fearless. I did my best to choose a cleaner product, but still took a chance. That's what life is all about.

If there is anything you have been longing to do, I encourage you stretch out of your comfort zone. What's the worst that can happen? For me, it was the risk that my hair would fall out, but instead I grew in confidence.
